5 Ways To Go Broke
Getting rich is pretty easy. But many common
money-traps can just as easily make you poor, says
Mike Finley, author of "Financial Happine$$." If
you're wondering why you're never getting ahead,
take a look at these five traps and see if you're
snared by one or more of them.
1. Focus on looking good: It's one thing to be in
shape and well groomed, quite another to wear the
latest designer clothes and shoes and drive in late-
model luxury cars. The thing about clothing and cars
is that they're depreciating assets. The moment you
buy them, they're used and worth significantly less
than what you paid. If you pay up for labels and shop
till you drop, the value of your "investment" in
looking good looks worse and worse.
Consider the person who bought a BMW 750i back in
2011 and wants to replace it in 2014. The car's
suggested retail price was $75,000 three years ago,
but the same vehicle would go for about $40,000
today, according to KBB.com. That's a $34,000 net
cost over three years, or just over $11,300 per year.
If this individual had purchased a Honda Accord in
2011 instead of the pricier BMW, he would still have
been able to get around, but he'd do that at a
significantly lower cost.
Specifically, the Accord that cost $25,000 new in
2011 could be sold for about $13,000 three years
later. The annual cost of ownership works out to
$4,000, so he has $7,300 more to save and invest
each year than the owner of the BMW. That may not
make him look stylish, but it does make him look
smart.
2. Live paycheck-to-paycheck: Surveys show that
virtually everyone who lives above the poverty line
has the ability to save $20 a week. But 28 percent of
the population has absolutely no emergency fund,
according to Bankrate.com. That means they're
teetering on the edge of insolvency, just begging to
be sent over the brink by an unexpected expense,
such as a car repair, health crisis or job loss.
3. Play the lottery: Somebody's got to win, so why
not you, right? Unfortunately, your chance of winning
is worse than your chance of getting crushed by a
vending machine or becoming a movie star,
according to the Daily Beast. Indeed, gambling of
any kind is a losing proposition. According to a Wall
Street Journal analysis, 95 percent of gamblers lose
in the end.
4. Buy on credit: There's nothing that can make you
poorer than paying interest on purchases that you
made years ago, but can't pay off. Consider: If you
have a $5,000 balance on a credit card charging 19
percent per annum and pay $100 a month against
the loan, you'll spend 100 months paying off the bill
and end up paying a total of $10,000 -- $5,000 in
principal and $5,000 in interest. If you don't want to
be poor, don't buy things before you can afford to
pay for them with cash.
5. Be a victim: The victim mentality involves blaming
others for whatever goes wrong, but it's really a way
to rationalize making -- and continuing to make --

Lead us to Sambisa Forest, Danjuma tells Jonathan
The Chairman of the Victims Support Fund, Lt.-Gen.
Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), on Wednesday said
members of the committee would not visit Sambisa
Forest believed to be one of the strongholds of the
Boko Haram sect except President Goodluck Jonathan
was ready to take the lead.
He spoke just as Jonathan vowed that the days of the
sect were numbered.
Danjuma, a former Minister of Defence, spoke while
responding to Jonathan’s inauguration speech in
which he tasked members of the committee to be
ready to visit all parts of the country including the
dreaded forest.
“Mr. President, we won’t go to Sambisa Forest. As the
Commander-in-Chief, you should take the lead and
we will follow,” he said amidst laughter from those
who attended the inauguration.
Danjuma also shocked those in attendance when he
told the President that the insurgents, who were
wreaking havoc in parts of the country were having
the upper hand.
He stressed the need for the war to be won quickly.
The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki
(retd.), agreed with Danjuma that the war must be
won quickly.
He said the government had realised that it was time
to draw the line.
“We have realised that the time has come to draw
the line. We will win the war and do so quickly,” he
promised.
Jonathan, in his inauguration speech, said the days of
the Boko Haram sect were numbered and that it was
a matter of days for their violent campaign to come
to an end.
He regretted that members of the sect had wasted
unimaginable human and material resources since
they started their campaign of violence.
He noted that the sect members had been
brainwashed into believing that they were doing God
a favour, describing them as enemies of humanity.
While saying that there would be no hiding place for
the sect, Jonathan said his government would expose
them.

The bombardment and closure of Tripoli
international airport over the past three days served
as yet another confirmation that Libyan militia
groups enjoy freedom of action, unencumbered by
either law or government forces.
The fresh round of fighting broke out early Sunday
morning when a coalition of Islamist militia groups
along with another militia group from Misrata,
located 193km east of the capital, attacked a rival
militia group from Zintan, a small but powerful town
in Libya’s western mountains located 145km
southwest of the capital, over control of Tripoli’s
international airport.
Since the 2011 uprising that overthrew Muammar
Gaddafi, Tripoli international airport has been under
the control of the Zintan militia group. Pictures
posted on several social media platforms show the
Zintan militias trenched inside the airport setting up
a makeshift field clinic in the airport lobby.
Many Libyans wonder aloud which neighbouring
country would tolerate armed bands launching
artillery at their main airport, undisturbed by security
forces. “It’s incredible,” said Mohammed, a waiter at
a downtown coffee bar. “These guys (militias) go
where they want, do what they want.”

FG intensifies checks on anti-malaria drugs

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that
measures have been put in place to reduce the
proliferation of anti-malaria drugs in the country.
To deal with the health challenges associated with
malaria, the government would need over $700m to
fight the menace between now and 2016.
The Coordinator of National Malaria Elimination
Programme, Dr. Nnenna Ezeigwe, stated this in an
exclusive interview with THE PUNCH on the sidelines
of an interactive session with journalists on private
sector co-payment mechanism for improving access
to malaria medicine.
She said, “We already have a GAP analysis of the
amount of money we need to address the issue of
malaria between now and 2016. It is over $700m.
“The only drug we recognise is ACT, Artemisinin
Combination Therapy. We are saying that
Chloroquine is not recommended for the treatment of
malaria.
“Oral Artemisinin in any form is not recommended
for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria. The only
medicine that is recommended is ACT. One of the
steps we are taking to prevent proliferation of anti-
malaria drugs is through the media. Let the media
tell them where we stand. Tell them that they should
take ACT for uncomplicated malaria.”
Speaking on the best drug for pregnant women
having malaria, she said the NMEP has developed a
package for pregnant women.
She said, “We have a strategy for malaria in
pregnancy. We are advocating that every pregnant
woman must register early for ante-natal care.
“From each visit when the pregnancy is 16 weeks
upwards, every pregnant woman should ask for IPTC,
which means Intermittent Preventive Treatment in
Pregnancy.
“When every pregnant woman is able to access this
throughout the pregnancy, she should be free of
malaria. If a pregnant women come down with
malaria, that person will be treated like any other
person.”
Experts at the programme including the Malaria
Programme Director, Society for Family Health, Dr.
Ernest Nwokolo, called on the public to always insist
on N150 for audit dose of 24 tablets ACT.
Nwokolo said, “State governments are encouraged to
key into the ACT co-payment mechanism for their
respective states. The Global Fund Task Force is
available to offer technical assistance on setting up
this Private Public Partnership at the state level.
“Philanthropists and companies are encouraged to
key into the private sector co-payment funding
system in order to help their states or populations of
interest.”

Chibok girls’ parents deny playing politics
Parents of the schoolgirls abducted by militant
Islamists at the Government Secondary School,
Chibok, Borno State, have denied playing politics by
refusing to meet President Goodluck Jonathan.
Tuesday’s meeting failed to take place because
proper protocol had not been followed, their
spokesman said.
Jonathan said the parents had called off the meeting
after being manipulated by the #BringBackOurGirls
campaign group.
Boko Haram captured more than 200 girls in the
town of Chibok on April 14.
Jonathan was widely criticised for failing to meet
distraught parents and not doing enough to rescue
the girls.
On Monday, he agreed to meet 12 parents and five
girls who escaped shortly after being seized by Boko
Haram, following a request by Pakistani rights
campaigner Malala Yousafzai.
Chibok community spokesman Dauda Iliya said the
proposed meeting had been organised in a hurry, so
there was not enough time to consult with all the
parents.
Chibok residents were “very traumatised” and
people had lost trust in each other, he said.
If a small number of parents suddenly announced
they had met the president, they would have a “hard
time” from the others, and there might be a
“suspicion that money had changed hands”, Iliya
said.
The decision had “nothing” to do with the
#BringBackOurGirls campaign group, he told BBC
Focus on Africa.
“We are in pain. We can’t bear any animosity to the
government,” Iliya said.
Islamists at the Government Secondary School,
