We won’t concede any state to B’Haram –DHQ
Security agencies in the country have vowed that they will not
concede any state of the federation to the Boko Haram Islamic
sect or any other terrorist organisation.
The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris
Olukolade, made the pledge at a press briefing in Abuja on
Monday. The occasion was organised by the National
Information Centre, chaired by the Director General of the
National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri.
Olukolade said, “We are not conceding any part of this country
to any terrorist group. The Nigerian security agencies are active
and will reverse every form of insecurity wherever. It won’t be
stampeded by what is found on the social media.
“The fact remains that we are not conceding any of the state to
terrorists. We are committed to securing Nigeria as mandated by
the constitution and no group will be allowed to raise any flag
in any part of the country. If you see someone hiding a flag
under his bed and you want me to confirm it here; that is not
possible.”
He was responding to a question seeking confirmation on the
reported hoisting of flags and mounting of roadblocks in some
parts of Borno State.
Also speaking at the conference, Omeri warned parents not to
allow their children to be used negatively by any group,
alleging that some #BringBackOurGirls campaigners planned to
use children to mark the 100 days of the abduction of over 200
girls from the Government Secondary School, Chibok, on April
14.
Omeri said, “Information available to us now is that some
groups are now planning to mobilise children from across the
country and within Abuja to commemorate 100 days of the
abduction of Chibok girls.
“While it is the legitimate right of citizens to protest, especially
in democracy that we practise, the President is committed to
ensuring the right of every citizen; we wish to ask parents to be
mindful of this development and not to allow their children to
be used.”
“We want to state that all of us are standing with the parents of
the Chibok girls. There is no need for us to create another round
of catastrophe by leading our children where they ought not to
be. This is holiday period and they should use it wisely.
“We have noted that a number of people have appeared in
solidarity with the government and families of the Chibok girls.
This is commendable and encouraging.
“Some people, however, are misdirecting the campaign by
introducing issues that are inimical to the entire process. We
wish that we will stay with the message; all of us must stay with
the message and canvass for the release of these girls.”
On the alleged detention of former Minister of Education, Mrs.
Oby Ezekwesili, at the airport on her way to Britain, the Deputy
Director of the Department of State Security, Mrs. Marylyn Ogar
said the #BringBackOurGirls campaigner was seeking cheap
popularity.
She said the DSS was only doing its work and had no intention
whatsoever to detain the former minister.
She said, “The government has asked the SSS to be at the airport
and I am wondering where Oby is right now. We don’t have any
such person in our detention facilities. She is already on her
way to the UK.
“Statutorily, the SSS clears all passengers that travel out and
into this country. Until people stop aggregating to themselves
unnecessary importance, we will continue to have serious
security challenges. Security issues must not be trivialised for
any reasons.”

2015: Jonathan’ll lose in northern states, says Kwankwaso
Jonathan and Kwankwaso
The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said
President Goodluck Jonathan cannot win any of the 19 northern
states in a free and fair contest come 2015.
Kwankwaso said this in six posts on his twitter handle
@Rkwankwaso which was viewed by our correspondent, in
Abuja, on Monday.
The governor said he arrived at this conclusion after
undertaking a survey of northern states.
He explained that his findings showed that none of the affected
states would be willing to vote in favour of the current state of
affairs.
Kwankwaso said, “I have not taken the time to go to the South
to study what is happening, but I had time to study the North. In
the 19 states I don’t see any state where under a free and fair
election; people will go and vote for the status quo.
“The status quo is not good for anybody because it has failed to
provide the basic services to justify why the people voted for
this government.
“Being a President is not about personal enjoyment, it also does
not mean protecting some and ignoring others.
“Once anyone is elected as a President or a governor, you are no
more the chairman of your party, you are no more Edwin Clark,
who is the leader of the Ijaw nation, but you are the President
for both who voted for you and those who did not, those who
like you, and those who do not like you.”
The governor, who has signified interest in contesting the
Presidency in 2015 on the platform of the All Progressives
Congress, said a government in a blessed and rich country like
Nigeria which could not protect its citizens did not deserve to
be in office.
He expressed disappointment that thousands of Nigerians were
currently in Niger Republic, Cameroun and Chad as refugees
and nobody was even talking about them.
This, and others he said, were the issues on the ground that must
be tackled.
“Today whether you are from the South or the North, Christian
or Muslim does not matter; what really matter is how to get
peace back,” he added.
Speaking about the growing state of insecurity especially in the
North-East, Kwankwaso said the protection of every inch of the
Nigerian territory and the people therein; was the responsibility
of the occupant of the office of President irrespective of tribe,
religion, culture or political affiliation.
He, however, said the situation today was such that people were
being killed, maimed and even abducted on a daily basis.
The governor noted that security was the most basic of
functions of any government therefore any government that
could not provide the basic needs of its people had no business
hanging on.
Kwankwaso observed that the absence of purposeful leadership
was the reason why even the international community feel that
there is no government in Nigeria.
Ex-petroleum minister, Rilwanu Lukman, dies at 75
A former
Minister
of
Petroleum,
Dr.
Rilwanu
Lukman,
is dead.
He died in Austria on Monday at the age of 75.
Senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources
and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation confirmed
Lukman’s death to one of our correspondents in Abuja.
An official of the ministry, who pleaded not to be named
because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, said the
former minister succumbed to death after a prolonged battle
with prostrate cancer.
Industry stakeholders who spoke with one of our
correspondents during separate interviews, described Lukman
as one of the best petroleum ministers in the country.
Lukman was born in Zaria, Kaduna State, on August 26, 1938
and he held several ministerial positions before he became the
Secretary General of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting
Countries, from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2000.
A trained mining engineer, Lukman was on December 18, 2008,
appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources during the
administration of the late president, Umaru Yar’Adua, a position
he held till March 2010.
Meanwhile, Nigerians including President Goodluck Jonathan,
Senate President, David Mark, a former Vice President, Alhaji
Atiku Abubakar, and some governors have described his death
as a great loss to the country.
Jonathan in a statement by his spokesman, Reuben Abati,
commiserated with the former minister’s family, the government
and people of his home state, Kaduna, as well as his friends,
associates and all those he mentored over the years in the
domestic and global oil industry.
The statement read, “As Alhaji Lukman’s soul returns to its
Maker, President Jonathan joins all who knew him in giving
thanks to God Almighty for bestowing him on the nation and for
the great intelligence, integrity, competence, and humility with
which he distinguished himself in all his national and
international assignments.”
Mark, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul
Mumeh, noted that Lukman was one of the few Africans who
left their positive foot prints on the global stage.
He maintained that Nigeria had lost a bright, fertile mind, with
the death of the elderstatesman.
“As a public servant, he was extra- ordinary. As OPEC Secretary
General, Lukman demonstrated competence, excellence and
high sense of wisdom before the international community and
indeed raised the reputation of Nigeria as a strategic and
important global player especially in the oil and gas sector.”.
“Nigeria has lost one of her brightest and fertile minds. He was
a man of honour and integrity. We shall miss his deep sense of
wisdom and knowledge,” Mark stated.
Atiku in a statement by his media office in Abuja on Monday
described the deceased as the nation’s best oil minister.
He recalled that Lukman’s contribution to the management of
the nation’s oil and gas sector provided the impetus for his
elevation as Secretary General of OPEC.
The Turaki Adamawa described his death as a monumental loss
and prayed that Allah would grant his family and the nation the
fortitude to bear the loss.
Also, the Northern States Governors’ Forum has expressed
shock over Lukman’s death.
The Chairman of the NGF, who is also the Niger State Governor,
Dr. Babangida Aliyu, said Lukman was Nigeria’s gift to the
world, adding that his intellectual inputs to the petroleum sector
and science as a whole were indelible.
This was contained in a press statement issued by Aliyu’s Chief
Press Secretary, Mr. Israel Ebije on Monday.
The governors stated, “Humanity has lost a thoroughbred
professional, fine gentleman, world-class petroleum engineer
and astute manager of human and material resources
